The story

The Story of Beijing: A City of Stories

Listen closely. Can you hear the gentle ringing of bells on bicycles as they glide through narrow alleyways. Can you smell the delicious scent of sizzling dumplings and sweet roasted chestnuts from street carts. Look around and you will see ancient, curved temple roofs sitting peacefully next to towering glass skyscrapers that touch the clouds. I am a place that holds thousands of years of stories within my walls. A grand, secret palace rests at my heart, and a famous stone wall, like a great dragon, snakes over the mountains nearby. In my quiet corners, history whispers, and in my grand squares, it proudly shouts its tales for all to hear. I have been home to emperors, poets, and families for centuries. I am Beijing, the capital of China.

My story is very, very long, stretching back over 3,000 years. But one of my most important chapters began when a powerful ruler decided I would be the heart of his empire. In the year 1271, the great emperor Kublai Khan chose me as the capital for his Yuan Dynasty. He gave me the name Dadu, which means 'Great Capital,' and he had big plans for me. His city planners were brilliant. They designed my streets on a neat grid, like a giant checkerboard. My avenues were wide and straight, perfect for grand parades with soldiers and horses, and for welcoming important visitors from faraway lands, like the famous explorer Marco Polo. It was then that I truly began to feel like the center of the world, a magnificent city built with purpose and vision.

Time moved on, and new rulers came with new dreams. In the early 1400s, during the Ming Dynasty, an emperor named the Yongle Emperor decided to make me his capital once again. This time, he gave me the name I have today: Beijing, which means 'Northern Capital.' He wanted to build something spectacular at my very center, a home worthy of the 'Son of Heaven,' as the emperor was called. Starting in the year 1406, thousands of artists and workers began a project of incredible size. For 14 years they worked, and when they finished in 1420, they had created a breathtaking palace complex. It was called the Forbidden City because ordinary people were not allowed to enter its gates. At the same time, my builders also created the beautiful Temple of Heaven, a place with a stunning triple-gabled roof of blue tiles, where the emperors would go to pray for a good harvest for all the people in the land.

Through the centuries, I have never stopped growing and changing. A very proud day in my modern history was October 1st, 1949, when I was declared the capital of the new People's Republic of China. Today, my past and present live side-by-side. You can wander through my ancient, narrow alleyways, called hutongs, where families have lived for generations in traditional courtyard homes. Just a short walk away, you can look up at futuristic skyscrapers that glitter in the sun. One of my most exciting moments came in the summer of 2008, when I hosted the Olympic Games. I welcomed athletes and visitors from every corner of the globe. For this special event, I even got a new landmark, a magnificent stadium that everyone calls the 'Bird's Nest' because of its amazing design.

I am a city that connects an incredible past with an exciting future. My ancient palaces and temples stand proudly, sharing their stories of emperors and dynasties with everyone who visits. My modern buildings reach for the sky, filled with new ideas and dreams. My story is written in every stone of the Great Wall, every yellow-tiled roof of the Forbidden City, and every joyful cheer from a neighborhood game. It continues to be written every day by the people who call me home and the friends, like you, who come to listen to my tales. My gates are always open, inviting you to come and add your own chapter to my story.
