Just want Caño Cristales?
Imagine a river that isn't just blue or brown, but is painted with all the colors of a rainbow. Streaks of bright red, sunny yellow, and deep purple dance under the water. The sun warms my ripples, making them sparkle like jewels. I flow through a special place with tall mountains and green jungles all around. What could I be? I am Caño Cristales, the River of Five Colors. You can find me tucked away in the beautiful country of Colombia. I am not like any other river in the world, and I have a wonderful secret to share with you.
For most of the year, I look like a regular river, with green mosses sleeping on my rocky bed. But my secret is a special little plant called Macarenia clavigera. It’s a bit shy. It waits all year for just the right time to show its true colors. Between the months of July and November, when the sun shines just right and my water is at the perfect level, the little plant wakes up. It blooms into the most amazing shades of red, pink, and purple. I have been flowing this way for a very, very long time, over some of the oldest rocks on the whole planet. For many years, my colorful secret was kept safe because it was hard for people to visit me. But after the year 2009, the area around me became peaceful and safe. That's when friends from all over the world could finally come and see my beautiful rainbow waters for themselves.
Now, people from far and wide come to walk along my banks. They whisper about how magical I look. But my colorful plants are very delicate, so my visitors know they must be very gentle. They cannot swim with sunscreen on or step on the bright colors, because that would hurt my little plant friends. I love sharing my beauty, and I am happy to show everyone how wonderful our Earth can be. I am a reminder that nature is full of amazing surprises. So, the next time you see a rainbow in the sky after a rainstorm, remember that there is a rainbow river in Colombia, sparkling just for you and for everyone who helps protect me.
