Just want Cenotes of the Yucatán?
Deep down in the warm, green jungle, I keep a secret. Sunshine peeks through the leaves and makes little sparkles on my water. My water is cool and clear, like a shiny blue jewel hiding in the earth. It feels so nice to be a quiet, calm pool where little fish swim and green vines hang down to say hello. Birds sing in the trees above me, and everything feels peaceful. I have been here for a very, very long time, waiting for friends to find me. I am a cenote, a secret swimming hole made by nature.
My story started a long, long time ago, even before the dinosaurs were gone. Around 66 million years ago, a giant rock from space crashed into the Earth. BOOM. The big crash made tiny cracks in the ground, deep, deep down. Then, for thousands and thousands of years, the rain came. Drip, drip, drip. Little raindrops found the cracks and dripped inside. The water slowly made a big, secret room underground, like a hidden cave. One day, the roof of my cave fell in, and I could finally see the blue sky and the bright sun.
After a long time, I made new friends. Around the year 400, people called the Maya came to live in the jungle near me. I was very important to them. In the hot jungle, it was hard to find clean water to drink. But my water was always fresh and cool. My Maya friends would visit me to get water for drinking and cooking. They thought I was a special, magical place. They would say thank you for my wonderful water that helped them and their children stay healthy and strong.
Today, you can still visit me. I love it when families come to see my clear, blue water. Children laugh and SPLASH. They swim where the Maya people once visited. You can see the little fish darting around your toes and look up at the green jungle all around. I may be very old, but I still love sharing my magic. I am here to give everyone a happy, cool place to play and remember the long, long story of the earth.
