The story

The Four Towers of Hyderabad

Imagine standing tall in the middle of a city buzzing with life. The air is filled with the sweet smell of jasmine flowers and yummy biryani cooking nearby. You can hear the cheerful calls of vendors selling colorful bangles and the happy chatter of people walking by. Four beautiful towers, like long, graceful arms, reach up to touch the clear blue sky. Below them, four grand arches open wide, as if to give everyone a big, welcoming hug. I have stood here for a very long time, watching the city grow all around me. I am the Charminar, the heart of Hyderabad, India.

My story begins a very long time ago. A kind and wise ruler named Sultan Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah decided to build me. He started my construction in the year 1591 CE. There is a story that people love to tell about why I was made. At that time, a terrible sickness was spreading through the old city, making many people very ill. The Sultan was worried for his people, so he prayed right in the center of the city. He made a promise that if the sickness went away, he would build a beautiful monument with a mosque inside it, right on the spot where he prayed. His prayers were answered, and everyone became healthy and happy again. The Sultan was a man who kept his promises. He built me to be strong and beautiful, a special place to say thank you. He gave me four magnificent towers, and that is how I got my name. In the local language, 'char' means four and 'minar' means tower. So, I am the 'Four Towers'.

For hundreds of years, I have been the heart of the city, watching over everyone. A wonderful, busy market grew all around my feet. It is called the Laad Bazaar, and it is famous for its thousands of sparkling glass bangles that glitter in every color of the rainbow. I have watched generations of families and friends meet under my arches. They come to celebrate happy festivals like Eid and Diwali, filling the air with laughter and joy. I am very old, but people have always taken good care of me. Once, a long, long time ago in the year 1824 CE, a bolt of lightning struck one of my towers. "Oh no." everyone thought. But kind people quickly came and fixed me, making my tower strong and beautiful again. I have always felt loved by the people of Hyderabad.

Today, I am just as busy as ever. When the sun goes down, I get to wear a beautiful coat of bright lights. I glow against the dark night sky, shining like a star for the whole city to see. I love it when visitors come from all over the world. They look up at my tall towers with big smiles, take pictures to remember their visit, and make happy memories with their families. I am more than just a building made of stone. I am a symbol of history, beauty, and friendship. I stand proudly in the middle of this amazing city, reminding everyone of a promise kept long ago and welcoming new friends every single day.
