Just want Cinque Terre?
Imagine houses painted like a rainbow—sunny yellow, bright pink, and ocean blue—all snuggled together on steep, rocky cliffs that dive right into a sparkling sea. I feel the warm sun on my stone walls and hear the gentle splash of waves below. For a long time, the only visitors I had were fishermen in their little boats and seagulls swooping overhead. Do you know who I am? I am Cinque Terre, which means 'The Five Lands' in Italian, because I am five special villages in one.
My story began a very, very long time ago, around the 11th century. The first families who came here saw these steep cliffs and thought, 'How can we live and grow food here?'. They were clever and hardworking. They carefully cut into the hillsides and built thousands of stone walls by hand to create flat steps of land called terraces. On these terraces, which look like a giant green staircase climbing the cliffs, they planted grapevines and olive trees. The first of my villages, Monterosso and Vernazza, were born around this time. Life was quiet, and for hundreds of years, my five villages—Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore—were like a hidden secret, connected only by winding footpaths and the sea.
For centuries, getting from one of my villages to another was a real adventure. But then, in the year 1874, a big change came chugging along. A railway line was built, tunneling right through my rocky cliffs. For the first time, a train connected all of my villages to each other and to the rest of the world. The sound of the train's whistle was a sound of friendship, bringing new people to visit and making it easier for my villagers to share their delicious grapes and olives with everyone.

Today, I am a place that people from all over the world dream of visiting. On December 5th, 1997, I was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which means I am treasured for my special beauty and history. Visitors love to walk my famous paths, like the Via dell'Amore, or 'Path of Love,' and see my colorful houses glow in the sunset. I love sharing my sunshine, my sea breezes, and my story. I show everyone that with teamwork and bright ideas, people can build beautiful communities even in the most surprising places, creating a treasure that lasts forever.
