The story

The Five Lands Clinging to the Sea

Imagine the warm sun on your face and the scent of salty air mixed with lemons and basil. Below you, the bright blue sea whispers against tall, rocky cliffs. Tucked into these cliffs are houses painted in every color of the sunset—sunny yellow, warm orange, cherry red, and pastel pink. They look as if a giant spilled a box of crayons right onto the coast of Italy. For centuries, I have been a secret hidden away, a handful of colorful jewels sparkling by the Ligurian Sea. I am the Cinque Terre, which in Italian means the Five Lands, because I am not just one place, but five beautiful villages linked together by the sea and the sky.

My story begins a very long time ago, back in the 11th century. The first people who came to live here chose my cliffs for a very good reason. The sea gave them plenty of fish to eat and was a highway for trading with others, but the high, steep land offered protection from pirates and invaders. Life was safe, but it was not easy. Look at my hillsides. They are almost vertical. How could anyone grow food here? The clever and hardworking people who settled in my first villages, Monterosso and Vernazza, had a brilliant idea. They began building terraces, or 'terrazze' as they are called here. For hundreds of years, they patiently stacked stones one by one, without any mortar to hold them together, creating thousands of miles of dry-stone walls. These walls transformed my steep slopes into flat steps of land where they could plant grapevines and olive trees. It was an incredible challenge, but their hard work paid off. By the 13th century, all five of my villages—Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore—were thriving, protected by the powerful Republic of Genoa.

For most of my life, I was very isolated. The mountains behind me and the sea in front of me were like giant walls. The only way to travel between my five villages was to take a boat on the water or to hike along narrow, winding footpaths that zigzagged up and down the cliffs. These paths were steep and difficult, often used by farmers and their mules carrying baskets of grapes and lemons. For centuries, this was the only way. Then, in the 1870s, everything changed. A new sound echoed through my valleys—the sound of progress. Brave railway workers arrived with dynamite and drills. They faced the dangerous job of carving tunnels directly through my solid rock cliffs. It was a monumental task, but they succeeded. When the railway was finished, it was like a magic key unlocking a hidden door. For the first time, I was connected to the rest of Italy. The trains brought new goods, new ideas, and new people who wanted to see my colorful houses for themselves.

As more people heard about my beauty, I became famous all over the world. To protect my unique landscape and the incredible work of those early farmers, I was given special titles. In 1997, I became a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and in 1999, I became a National Park. This means I am a treasure not just for Italy, but for everyone on Earth to care for and protect. My life hasn't always been peaceful. On October 25th, 2011, a terrible flood and landslides caused great damage. But the people here are strong, just like the stone walls their ancestors built. They worked together to clean and rebuild, showing incredible resilience. Today, when you walk my paths or ride the train through my tunnels, you are seeing a story of human creativity and endurance. I am a reminder that by working together with nature, people can create something beautiful that lasts for centuries, a story of strength that continues to inspire all who visit.
