The story

A Story of Colombia

I feel two big oceans splashing on my sides. One is warm and one is cool. Tall, tall mountains reach up to the sky like sleepy giants, and big green rainforests are full of chattering animals. I smell sweet flowers and yummy coffee beans growing all around me. I am a happy place with bright colors everywhere you look. I am Colombia.

Long, long ago, special people lived here. They were called the Muisca and the Tayrona. They made shiny, beautiful things out of gold that looked like sunshine. They loved me very much. Later, big ships came across the water with new people. Everyone wanted me to be a happy home for families to grow. A kind hero named Simón Bolívar helped the people work together. On a very special day, July 20th, 1810, everyone celebrated because I was becoming a free and happy land for all my people. They waved flags and cheered so loud. It was a very important day for me.

Today, I am full of music and dancing. You can hear happy cumbia songs playing everywhere. People eat yummy corn cakes called arepas and wear clothes with all the colors of the rainbow. I share my beautiful flowers and tasty coffee with the whole world, like a present. So many amazing animals live here, like slow-moving sloths and pretty pink dolphins that swim in my rivers. I love when friends come to visit and see all my wonders. I am a home full of joy for everyone to share.
