The story

The Country of Two Oceans and a Golden Heart

Imagine a land where two mighty oceans, the Pacific and the Caribbean, meet at its shores. Picture towering green mountains that touch the clouds, part of a great chain called the Andes. In my deepest corners, a vast, humid rainforest called the Amazon is alive with the calls of mysterious animals. The air here smells of rich, roasting coffee beans and sweet, colorful orchids—I have more kinds of orchids than any other place on Earth. If you listen closely, you can hear the cheerful rhythms of cumbia music that make you want to dance. I am a land of vibrant colors, incredible nature, and warm welcomes. I am Colombia.

My story begins long, long ago, even before the pyramids of Egypt were built. The first people walked my lands around 12,000 BCE, learning my secrets and living in harmony with my rivers and forests. Over thousands of years, brilliant cultures grew. The Tairona people built an amazing city of stone terraces and winding paths high in the mountains, which you now call Ciudad Perdida, or the 'Lost City,' around the year 800 CE. Another of my peoples, the Muisca, held a deep connection to my golden heart. You may have heard a legend of a golden city called El Dorado. The real story is even more wonderful. It was not a place, but a sacred ceremony. When a new Muisca leader was chosen, his body was covered in sticky clay and sparkling gold dust. He would then sail to the center of Lake Guatavita and dive in, washing the gold into the water as a gift to the gods. It was a symbol of leadership and respect for the earth, not of treasure to be taken.

For centuries, my people lived by their own traditions. But then, around the year 1499, ships from Spain arrived on the shores of the Americas. I was given my name in honor of an explorer, Christopher Columbus, though he never actually set foot on my soil. The Spanish settled here and founded new cities, including my capital, Bogotá, on August 6th, 1538. For nearly 300 years, I was ruled from far across the ocean. But the hearts of my people grew restless. They longed to be the masters of their own home. This desire for freedom finally burst into the open on July 20th, 1810, in Bogotá, with an event now known as the 'Cry for Independence.' It was the start of a long struggle. A brave leader named Simón Bolívar rose up to lead the fight, and on August 7th, 1819, his army won a great victory at the Battle of Boyacá. That day, my freedom was finally secured, and a new chapter of my story began.

Today, I am a country that sings its own song to the world. I share the rich flavor of my coffee, which is enjoyed in mugs across the globe. I offer the deep green sparkle of my emeralds, some of the finest in the world. I am a home for more species of birds than any other nation, a true paradise for anyone who loves nature. My story has been told by brilliant people, like the writer Gabriel García Márquez, who shared my magic with the world, and the artist Fernando Botero, who painted my people and traditions in his famous, joyful style. My people are resilient and full of hope. We have faced challenges, but we have worked hard to build a more peaceful home. Looking back, I see a story of ancient wisdom, a brave fight for freedom, and a vibrant culture that continues to grow. I am still a land of two oceans and a golden heart, and I invite everyone to come listen to my song.
