Delaware

A wide, gentle river flows along my side, and my shores are kissed by the Atlantic Ocean's cool waves. I'm not a very big place at all. In fact, you could drive from one side of me to the other in just a little while. I am a cozy home to quiet forests, sandy beaches, and friendly towns. Even though I am small, my story is very important to the whole country I live in. I am Delaware, and I am known as The First State.

For a very long time, my lands were cared for by the Lenape people. They lived in harmony with my forests and fished in my rivers. Then one day, something new appeared on the horizon—big ships with tall, white sails. In the year 1609, an explorer named Henry Hudson sailed his ship right into my bay, looking for a new path to faraway lands. A little while later, in 1631, people from a country called the Netherlands arrived and tried to build a small town. Then, in 1638, more ships came, this time with families from Sweden. They built a special fort out of logs and called it Fort Christina, which was the first permanent European settlement in my lands.

Many years passed, and something amazing happened. A new country, the United States of America, was born. After winning its freedom, the country needed a set of rules so that everyone could live together safely and fairly. This important set of rules was called the Constitution. Each of the thirteen states had to think about it and decide if they agreed. I knew these rules were a wonderful idea for our new country. On December 7th, 1787, I proudly raised my hand and said “Yes.” I was the very first one to agree. That is my proudest moment and why everyone gives me the special nickname, “The First State.”

Today, I may still be one of the smallest states, but my heart is big. People love to visit my sunny beaches in the summer and walk through my historic towns where you can still see old buildings. My story shows that you don't have to be the biggest to be important. Being brave and being the first to do the right thing is what truly matters. I hope my story inspires you to be a leader in your own special way.
