The story

A Story from Planet Earth

Have you ever looked up at the night sky and seen a bright star? I am much bigger than a star. I am a giant, beautiful ball spinning gently in space. My face is a swirl of fluffy white clouds and deep, sparkling blue oceans. I have tall, rocky mountains that tickle the sky and wide, green forests where animals play. I am a home for buzzing bees, tall giraffes, and splashing dolphins. Who am I? I am Planet Earth. It’s so nice to meet you. I was born a very, very long time ago, around 4.5 billion years ago. I started as just a spinning cloud of dust and gas, but I swirled and twirled until I became the wonderful home I am today.

In my early days, I was not as calm and blue as I am now. I was a hot, rocky world with bubbling volcanoes. It was a little messy. But then, something amazing happened. Water arrived, filling up my big dips and hollows to create my wonderful oceans. Splish, splash. Soon after my oceans formed, another miracle happened. The very first tiny life appeared in my waters around 3.7 billion years ago. They were so small you couldn't even see them, but they were the beginning of everything. Millions and millions of years passed. My lands became green with plants. Then came some of my most famous residents. Starting around 230 million years ago, giant dinosaurs roamed across my continents. Tyrannosaurus Rex stomped with his big feet, and Brachiosaurus munched on the tallest trees. They lived here for a very long time, but they disappeared about 66 million years ago. Now, their big bones are hiding under my soil, like a special treasure for you to find.

After the dinosaurs, my world became quiet for a while. Then, my newest friends arrived. You. People first appeared on my surface around 300,000 years ago. I watched with such joy as you learned to build homes, paint pictures on cave walls, and tell stories around campfires. You were so curious. You built boats to sail across my big blue oceans and discovered new lands. You climbed my tallest mountains just to see the view from the top. I have always been so proud of your creativity and your adventurous hearts. One of the most special days for me was December 7th, 1972. On that day, some people traveled far up into space in a rocket ship. They looked back at me and took a picture. When they saw me, a beautiful, swirling ball of blue and white, they called me the 'Blue Marble.' It made me feel so loved.

Today, I am still spinning, and I am a home for so many wonderful things. I am your home, the home of sleepy sloths, colorful parrots, and every single person you know. I am a world full of amazing places to explore and incredible things to learn. I hope you will always be curious about me. Let's keep exploring, learning, and taking good care of our beautiful, sparkling home together, so we can all be happy and healthy for a long, long time.
