The story

The Story of the Globe Theatre

I am round like a big hug, with warm wooden walls that feel like sunshine. I live in a busy city called London, right by a sleepy river. In my center, my roof is open to the sky, so the sun can warm my stage and the stars can peek in to watch the show. I am a very special house built for happy stories and wonderful adventures. I am the Globe Theatre.

I was built a very, very long time ago, in the year 1599. A famous storyteller named William Shakespeare and his friends made me, piece by piece. They wanted a special place to share their amazing plays with everyone. Soon, lots of friends came to visit me. They would stand under the open sky and watch stories about brave kings, lovely queens, and silly, magical fairies. I loved hearing everyone laugh and cheer for the actors on my stage. It was my favorite thing to be filled with so much happiness and so many happy sounds.

One day, on June 29th, 1613, we were all watching a play. A pretend cannon on my stage made a real spark. Whoops. The little spark flew up and landed on my straw roof, which was like dry grass. I got too hot and had to take a very, very long nap. My friends were sad, but they always remembered the wonderful stories we shared together inside my round walls.

After my long, long nap, people who loved stories decided to build me all over again. In the year 1997, a new me was opened for everyone to visit. Now, I get to share stories and songs with new friends every single day. I love to hear children laugh and clap. Stories bring us all together, and that makes me the happiest theatre in the whole wide world.
