The story

The Hill with a Secret Heart

For thousands of years, I was just a round, sleepy hill in the sunny landscape of modern-day Turkey. The wind whispered over my grassy slopes, and shepherds sometimes rested in my shade, never knowing the great secret I held just beneath the soil. I looked like any other hill, but I was really a time capsule, waiting patiently for the right moment to share my story. I held my breath for centuries, keeping my circles of giant stone pillars hidden from the world. It was a heavy secret, but I knew that one day, people would be ready to find me and learn what I had to teach them. I watched the world change from my quiet spot, always waiting. Finally, the time came. My name is Göbekli Tepe, which in the Turkish language means Potbelly Hill.

Let’s travel back in time, way back, to when the world was new and I was first being made. It was around 9600 BCE, which is almost 12,000 years ago. The people who created me were amazing. They were hunter-gatherers, which means they didn't live in cities or on farms yet. They moved with the seasons, following herds of animals and gathering wild plants. This was a time before people had invented farming, writing, or even pottery. But they were incredibly clever and worked together to achieve something magnificent. Using simple tools made of flint, they carved enormous T-shaped pillars from a nearby quarry. Some of these pillars are taller than a giraffe and weigh more than a school bus. They worked as a community to carry them here and raise them into the circles you can see today. On my stones, they carved incredible pictures of animals—scorpions, foxes, lions, snakes, and birds. I often wonder what stories these carvings told. Was I a special place for ceremonies. Was I a place for the community to gather and celebrate. Many people today think I might have been the world's very first temple.

After about 1,500 years of being a busy and important place, a strange thing happened. Around 8000 BCE, the very same kind of people who built and cherished me began to bury me. They did it very carefully, using tons and tons of earth, stone, and animal bones. It wasn't an act of anger or destruction. It was more like they were gently tucking me in for a long, long nap, protecting my secrets until the world was ready for them. From under my warm blanket of soil, I slept as the millennia passed. I was silent as great empires rose and fell far away. I listened as new languages were born and old ones were forgotten. The world outside changed in ways my builders could never have imagined, but my stone circles and their mysterious animal carvings stayed safe and sound, dreaming of the day they would see the sun again.

My long sleep finally ended in the modern world. For a while, no one knew I was here. Some surveyors noticed the tops of a few of my stones in 1963, but they thought they were just old gravestones and moved on. My secret stayed safe for a few more decades. Then, in 1994, a German archaeologist named Klaus Schmidt came to visit my hill. He had read the old survey report, and he had a feeling that there was something more to find. When he saw the flint chips scattered everywhere and the tops of my pillars peeking out, he knew instantly that I was something incredibly special. On October 4th, 1995, he and his team began to carefully dig, gently waking me from my slumber. Imagine their excitement as they brushed away the dirt of ten thousand years and slowly uncovered my giant stone circles. They were revealing a part of human history that everyone thought was lost forever.

Today, I am awake and telling my story to the world. I am a UNESCO World Heritage site, which means I am so important to human history that I must be protected forever. People come from all over the globe to walk among my stones and wonder about the people who made me. I am a beautiful puzzle that scientists are still studying, and every new discovery teaches us more about our shared past. I show everyone that even 12,000 years ago, people were creative, organized, and driven to build amazing things together. I am proof that the desire to connect, to create, and to understand our place in the world is one of the oldest and most wonderful parts of being human.
