Just want Göbekli Tepe?
For thousands and thousands of years, I slept under a soft blanket of dirt in a country we now call Turkey. I looked just like any other round, gentle hill where sheep might graze. But I was holding a very big secret deep inside. I wasn't a real hill made by nature. I was made by people a long, long time ago. Hello. I am Göbekli Tepe, which means Potbelly Hill.
A very, very long time ago, around the year 9500 BCE, people came to this spot to build me. This was long before the great pyramids of Egypt were even a dream. These people were hunters and gatherers, which means they found their food by hunting animals and gathering wild plants. They worked together to create something the world had never seen before. Using only stone tools, they carved enormous pillars of stone into a special T-shape. Some of my pillars are as tall as a giraffe and as heavy as a big truck. On these giant stones, they carved wonderful pictures of animals. You can see sneaky foxes, strong lions, big birds, and slithering snakes. I wasn't a home where people lived. I was a special place for them to meet. Maybe they came here to sing songs, tell stories, or celebrate together. I was one of the world's first temples.
After people visited me for about 1,500 years, they did something very surprising. Around the year 8000 BCE, they decided to put me to sleep. They carefully covered all my stone pillars with dirt, rocks, and soil. Bit by bit, they buried me completely, turning me back into the round hill that people saw for thousands of years. It was a long, quiet sleep under the earth. Then, one day, I started to wake up. In the year 1994 CE, a man who studied old things, an archaeologist named Klaus Schmidt, was exploring the area. He looked at my shape and thought, 'That doesn't look like a natural hill.' He had a feeling I was hiding something special. He and his team started to dig very carefully, and slowly, they uncovered my stone secrets and woke me from my nap.

Today, I am awake again for everyone to see. People travel from all over the world to visit me in Turkey and say hello. I am like a giant puzzle from the Stone Age that teaches us about the past. I show everyone how clever and creative people were, even so long ago. I am a reminder that our world is full of amazing secrets, just waiting under our feet, ready to tell us incredible stories.
