The story

The City That Dances Through Time

Feel the warm, salty air that drifts in from the deep blue ocean. It kisses the bright colors of my buildings—yellows, blues, and pinks that line the cobblestone streets. Listen closely. Can you hear the music floating from open doorways and the unique rumble of old, shiny cars driving by? I am a city of rhythm and light, a special place on the island of Cuba where the land meets the sparkling sea. People from all over the world come to walk my streets and feel my energy. I am Havana.

My story began a very long time ago, with ships and explorers. Spanish adventurers, led by a man named Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar, officially founded me in my current spot by the bay on November 16th, 1519. My harbor was deep and safe, the perfect place for giant Spanish ships called galleons to rest. These ships were like floating treasure chests, filled with gold and silver from the Americas, on their way back to Spain. But where there is treasure, there are often treasure hunters. Pirates knew about my riches, and I became a target. In 1555, a fearsome French pirate named Jacques de Sores attacked and burned much of me to the ground. It was a terrible time, but it taught my people they needed to protect me. So, they began to build massive stone fortresses. The most famous one, the Castillo de los Tres Reyes del Morro, or El Morro for short, was started in 1589. Its mighty walls rose right at the entrance to my bay, a powerful stone guardian watching over my waters.

With my harbor safe, I grew into a grand and beautiful city. During the 1800s, I became one of the wealthiest places in the Americas. The money came from huge farms growing sugar and tobacco, which were sent all over the world. Grand theaters were built for fancy operas, and wide avenues were laid out for elegant carriages. For a short time in 1762, British soldiers took control of me. Though it was brief, their arrival opened me up to trade with new countries and brought in new ideas. But as the years went on, the people of Cuba grew tired of being ruled by Spain. They wanted to be free. The struggle for independence was long, and a powerful event happened right in my harbor. On February 15th, 1898, the American battleship USS Maine mysteriously exploded and sank. This event helped start the Spanish-American War, which finally led to Cuba becoming an independent country.

In the 20th century, I became known as a glamorous and exciting place. But another huge change was coming. A leader named Fidel Castro led the Cuban Revolution, which triumphed on January 1st, 1959. After that, life here changed in many ways. It became very difficult to get new cars from America, so my people became incredible mechanics. They learned to fix the beautiful American cars from the 1950s, keeping them running for decades. That’s why today you can still see those shiny, classic cars cruising down my streets. Through all the changes, one thing has always remained: my music. The rhythms of salsa and son are my true heartbeat. To protect my history, my oldest part, called Habana Vieja, was named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1982, ensuring my beautiful old buildings would be saved for everyone to see.

Even though I am over 500 years old, my spirit is young and full of life. I am a resilient city, one that has stood through pirate attacks, wars, and great changes. My true strength is in my people—their creativity, their music, and their warm smiles. Visitors who walk my cobblestone streets can feel this energy. They hear the music, see the art, and taste the delicious food. They see a living, breathing city that dances through time. My story is not just in history books; it is being written every day in every song played and every classic car that rumbles down my avenues. My heart beats on, and it invites the world to dance along with me.
