Just want Havana?

The story

Havana: The City of Music and Sunshine

I feel the warm sun on my colorful buildings and the salty sea breeze from the ocean. Music spills from my windows and doorways, making people want to dance in my streets. Bright, shiny cars from long ago, painted like candy in every color you can imagine, cruise down my roads. Children laugh and play in my shady plazas, while musicians play happy tunes on their guitars. I am a city full of stories, music, and smiles, nestled beside the beautiful blue sea. From my grand theaters to my narrow, winding alleys, every corner has a secret to share. I am Havana, the heart of Cuba. People say I have a special rhythm, and if you listen closely, you can hear the happy beat of my long and exciting life.

My story begins a very long time ago. On November 16th, 1519, explorers from Spain, led by a man named Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar, decided my beautiful bay was the perfect place to build a town. My harbor is deep and safe, like a big, gentle hug for tired ships. Soon, I became a very important stopping point for the big wooden ships sailing between Europe and the Americas. These ships were often filled with amazing treasures like silver, gold, and precious gems. But all that treasure brought danger. Sneaky pirates with fast ships sailed the seas, hoping to steal the riches. I knew I had to be strong and brave to keep the ships and my people safe from them. I became the key to the whole region, a safe place where the treasure fleet could gather before making the long journey home across the big ocean. I was like a locked treasure chest that everyone wanted to open.

To protect the ships and my people, I needed some very strong guardians. So, great stone forts were built to watch over my waters, like giant stone soldiers standing guard day and night. In 1589, workers began building one of my most famous guardians, the Castillo de los Tres Reyes del Morro, or 'El Morro' for short. It sits right at the entrance to my harbor, a powerful protector. Its strong walls and tall lighthouse have watched over me for hundreds of years, shining a light to guide friendly ships in and warn enemies to stay away. As I grew safer behind my stone walls, my streets filled with grand buildings painted in happy yellows, blues, and pinks. My plazas, which are big open squares, became wonderful places for families to gather, listen to music, and share stories under the stars. I was becoming not just a strong city, but a beautiful one, too, full of life and color.

Today, my old stone streets and colorful buildings in the part of me called 'Old Havana' are so special that people from all over the world wanted to keep them safe. In 1982, the world decided my oldest part should be protected forever as a UNESCO World Heritage site. This means I am a treasure for everyone on Earth. People love to walk along my famous seawall, the Malecón, feeling the cool ocean spray and watching the waves dance. I am a city that loves to celebrate life with art, music, and dance. The happy sounds of salsa music still float through the air. I hold the stories of pirates, treasure, and brave guardians in my heart, and I invite everyone to come and share in the joy and friendship that fills my sunny streets.
