The House of Wisdom's Whispering Walls
In a big, sunny city called Baghdad, a very special house stood tall a long, long time ago. It wasn't a house for sleeping or eating. It was a house for thinking and dreaming. It was a home for books and big, bright ideas. Inside, shiny scrolls were tucked onto shelves, and you could hear the soft whispers of curious people sharing wonderful thoughts. It was a place full of wonder. Hello. I am the House of Wisdom.
A long, long time ago, a kind and wise ruler named Caliph al-Ma’mun had a brilliant idea. He wanted to gather all the stories and all the knowledge from everywhere in the world and put them in one special place. So, around the year 830, he built me to be that place. He invited smart people from lands near and far to come visit me. They brought books about the sparkly stars in the night sky, books about numbers for counting, and books about how to help people feel better when they were sick. Inside my walls, everyone shared their ideas. They would read stories in different languages and write them down in one language so everyone could understand. I was like a big, happy library filled with amazing discoveries and busy, buzzing brains.
My stone walls are not standing in Baghdad anymore. Like a sandcastle washed away by the sea, my building is gone now. But my ideas. Oh, my ideas are not gone. They flew out into the world like fluffy dandelion seeds floating on the wind, traveling to new places and helping people learn new things. They helped people create wonderful new inventions and write new stories. And even today, whenever you open a book, ask a big 'why?' question, or visit your own library at school or in your town, you are helping my happy, curious spirit stay alive forever. You are a little part of the House of Wisdom, too.

About
The House of Wisdom was a grand library and translation institute; its role as a formal academy is debated. It was a significant center of learning in Abbasid-era Baghdad, but some historians question how much influence it really had during the Islamic Golden Age.
