The story

The Story of the Mali Empire

Hello from a warm, sunny land, a place where the sun loves to smile. Can you feel its warmth on your skin. All around me is golden sand that sparkles and tickles your toes. A big, friendly river flows right by, whispering secrets as it goes. So many happy people lived here. They danced and sang and played together, a big family under the sun. I was their special home in West Africa. I am the great Mali Empire.

My story began a long, long time ago. A brave and kind boy named Sundiata Keita became my first king. Friends called him the 'Lion King' because he was so strong and had a big heart. Around the year 1235, he brought all the people together. He said, 'Let's be one big, happy family'. And they did. Everyone helped each other. They planted yummy yams and rice to eat. At night, they sat under the big baobab trees and told wonderful stories. We were all united and strong together, like a big hug.

Later, another wonderful king came to lead my people. His name was Mansa Musa, and he became king in the year 1312. He was very generous. In the year 1324, he went on a very long trip to see the world. He took so much shiny, bright gold with him. He shared the gold with everyone he met, making them smile. Because he was so kind, people everywhere heard about me, the amazing Mali Empire. He also built a special city called Timbuktu. It was a place where people came from far away to read books and learn new things together.

My time as a big kingdom ended a long, long time ago, in the 1600s. But my story never ends. The tales of my brave kings and friendly people are still told today. Children still hear about the Lion King who brought everyone together and the kind king who shared his gold. My spirit of friendship and learning is like a little seed that keeps growing in people's hearts in Africa and all around the world.
