Just want Oasis?
Imagine you are surrounded by endless waves of golden sand, with the hot sun shining down. Just when you think there is nothing but sand for miles, you see me. I am a splash of green in the middle of the desert, with tall palm trees that sway in the breeze and cool, sparkling springs of water that bubble up from the ground. For tired travelers, my shade is a gift and my water is a treasure. I am a safe and happy place, a secret garden hidden from the world. I am the Siwa Oasis, and I live in the heart of Egypt’s Western Desert.
Long, long ago, I was famous for something very special. I had a grand temple dedicated to the god Amun, and inside lived a wise oracle who could answer the most difficult questions. People traveled for many days just to hear the oracle’s secrets. One day, a very important visitor arrived. He was a brave young king named Alexander the Great, and he traveled a very long way to see me in the year 331 BCE. His journey across the hot, dry desert was very hard. He and his soldiers were thirsty and tired, but I welcomed them with my cool water and the sweet shade of my palm trees. After resting, Alexander went to the temple to speak with the oracle. He felt strong and hopeful here, and I was proud to give him a safe place to rest before he continued his great adventure.
For hundreds and hundreds of years, the big desert around me acted like a giant, sandy blanket, keeping me hidden and safe. Because I was so separate from the rest of the world, the people who lived here, called the Siwan people, created their own special way of life. They have their own language that sounds like music and build amazing homes and fortresses from mud and salt. The biggest one, called Shali, once stood tall and strong, protecting everyone inside. It was like living in a secret world. Then, in the year 1819, I was officially connected to the rest of modern Egypt, and the world began to discover my wonders.

Today, I am still a green jewel in the desert, and I love having visitors. People come from all over the world to see my ancient temple, swim in my salty lakes that make you float, and taste the sweet dates and olives that grow on my trees. I am a reminder that even in the toughest, driest places, life can grow and be beautiful. I show everyone that with a little water and a lot of heart, a community can bloom and share its gifts with the world.
