The story

The Palace That Sings

I sit right next to a big, sparkly river in a busy city called London. I have tall, pointy towers that look like sandcastles reaching for the clouds, and a giant clock face that winks in the sun. Every hour, my special bell sings a deep, friendly song: BONG. BONG. I am the Palace of Westminster.

I have been here for a very, very long time, since the 11th century. But I have not always looked this way. On October 16th, 1834, I had a big accident with a fire that made me very hot and crumbly. But my friends decided to build me all over again, starting in 1840. Two clever men, Charles Barry and Augustus Pugin, designed my new look. They gave me my beautiful towers and my famous clock. The big bell inside is named Big Ben, and he first started singing his happy 'BONG' on May 31st, 1859.

Today, I am a very important house. People come inside my grand rooms to talk about how to make the country a happy and safe place for everyone. They share ideas and make friendly rules called laws. I love to listen to them working together. And every hour, my friend Big Ben chimes to remind everyone that it is time to do something wonderful. I am proud to be a place that helps people care for each other.
