The story

The Smiling Park of Thailand

I have tall, pointy stone hats that reach for the sky. My giant stone friends sit very still and smile all day long. Ponds full of pretty flowers are like mirrors for the clouds. I am a quiet, peaceful place in a country called Thailand. Hello. I am Sukhothai Historical Park.

Long, long ago, around the 13th century, I became a brand new city. A kind and clever king named King Ramkhamhaeng helped me grow big and strong. I was the first big capital city of a kingdom called Siam. I was filled with happy sounds. Busy markets sold yummy snacks and colorful toys. People sang and celebrated together here. It was a wonderful, busy time.

After many, many years, around the late 15th century, my people moved to build new cities. I became very quiet. The jungle grew all around me, like a big, green blanket, and I slept for a long, long time. Then, one day, helpers came to wake me up. They carefully cleaned my stones and planted soft, green grass. On a very special day, December 12th, 1991, some important people said I was a treasure for the whole world to see.

Today, I love when friends like you come to visit me. You can ride bicycles on my wide paths and say hello to my smiling stone friends. You can sit in the shade and imagine all the stories my old walls hold. I am a very happy park, and I love sharing the secrets of Thailand from long ago with you and your family.
