The story

The City Built by an Eagle

Imagine floating on a giant, sparkling lake, with tall mountains watching over you from every side. White temples shine so brightly they look like they could touch the clouds above. Instead of dusty roads, shiny canals weave through the city like watery streets. You can hear the gentle splash of canoe paddles as people travel from place to place. The air smells sweet from thousands of colorful flowers growing on special gardens that float right on the water. It was a city built like a dream, a true jewel on the water. I am Tenochtitlan, the amazing capital city of the Mexica people, and this was my home.

My story begins with a long journey. The Mexica people were searching for a special place to build their home. Their leaders told them to look for a very important sign: a powerful eagle eating a snake while sitting on a cactus. For many years, they walked and looked, hoping to find this sign. Then, one day, around the year 1325, they saw it. Right on an island in the middle of a huge lake called Lake Texcoco, there was the eagle on the cactus. They were so happy. They knew they had found their home. Building me was tricky because I was on water, but the Mexica were clever. They created amazing floating gardens called 'chinampas' by piling up mud from the bottom of the lake. They grew corn, beans, and flowers on them. To connect my island to the land, they built long, strong bridges made of stone called causeways.

Soon, I was humming with life. I was the heartbeat of the Mexica people. My marketplace was one of the biggest in the world. People came from all over to trade colorful feathers from parrots, shiny stones, and even yummy chocolate. You could find almost anything there. At my very center stood my most important building, the Templo Mayor. It was a giant pyramid with two temples on top, reaching toward the sky to honor the gods. Life was busy and smart here. The Mexica people even built special stone pipes, called aqueducts, that stretched for miles. These aqueducts were like long straws, carrying fresh, clean drinking water all the way from the mountains to the people living in my heart. Everyone had what they needed to live and be happy.

My time as the great capital city came to an end in the year 1521. Visitors from across the sea arrived, and after a great struggle, a new city, called Mexico City, was built right on top of my foundations. For hundreds of years, I was hidden, sleeping under the streets. But my story wasn't over. On February 21st, 1978, some workers digging underground found a huge, carved stone. It was a piece of my old Templo Mayor. Since that day, people have been carefully uncovering my secrets. They have found my temples and treasures, and now everyone can see them. Even though I am hidden, my spirit lives on in the heart of Mexico City, reminding everyone of the brilliant and creative people who once called me home.
