Just want The Americas?
I am a world of incredible contrasts, a land of two halves joined by a delicate thread. My northern tip feels the icy breath of the Arctic, while the heart of my south beats in a steamy jungle rhythm. My mountains are giants that scrape the sky, their snowy peaks watching over deserts, plains, and forests teeming with life. My rivers are powerful, carving deep canyons as they journey to the sea. For thousands upon thousands of years, I was a secret world, a vast expanse of nature and humanity known only to those who lived upon my soil. I am the landmass that stretches from the North Pole to the South, a place of endless diversity and stories. I am North and South America. I am the Americas.
My human story began in a time of great cold, during the last Ice Age. About 20,000 years ago, the world’s oceans were lower, revealing a bridge of land and ice that connected me to Asia. This bridge, which scientists call Beringia, became a path for the brave. Following herds of giant mammoths and bison, small family groups walked across, their footsteps marking the first human presence on my soil. They were my first people, pioneers in a world untouched by their kind. When the great ice sheets melted around 11,000 BCE, the bridge vanished beneath the rising sea. My new inhabitants were now here to stay. Over centuries, they spread out, adapting with incredible ingenuity to every environment I offered. From the frozen tundra of the north to the lush rainforests and the windswept plains, they became the ancestors of all the Indigenous peoples of the Americas.
The Story of the Americas
As millennia passed, my people did more than just survive; they thrived, building magnificent and complex civilizations. A tapestry of cultures was woven across my lands. On my southern half, in what is now Mexico, the Olmec carved giant stone heads with mysterious expressions around 1500 BCE, leaving behind a legacy of art and influence. Later, beginning around 250 CE, the Maya built spectacular cities in the jungle with towering pyramids that reached for the heavens. They were brilliant astronomers who created a calendar of stunning accuracy. Far to the south, in my rugged Andes Mountains, the Inca Empire rose to power in the early 1400s. They were master engineers, building thousands of miles of roads and creating breathtaking cities like Machu Picchu, nestled among the clouds. And in my central lands, the Aztec built their awe-inspiring capital, Tenochtitlan, right on an island in the middle of a lake in 1325 CE. It was a city of canals, temples, and floating gardens. These civilizations, and many others, developed unique forms of art, government, and science, each a brilliant star in my historical sky.
For most of my existence, I was a world apart, my story unknown to the people of Europe, Africa, and Asia. That all changed in the late 1400s. On October 12th, 1492, three ships under the command of an Italian explorer, Christopher Columbus, who was sailing for the king and queen of Spain, landed on one of my Caribbean islands. This moment was a turning point not just for me, but for the entire world. It began what is now called the Columbian Exchange. Suddenly, people, ideas, plants, and animals began to travel between my lands and the rest of the globe. I introduced the world to potatoes, corn, tomatoes, and chocolate. In return, I received horses, cattle, and wheat. This great exchange connected humanity in a way it had never been before. However, it also brought tremendous upheaval and hardship for my first peoples, as new diseases arrived and their way of life was changed forever by the arrival of the Europeans.
For the next three centuries, much of my land was governed by European powers like Spain, Portugal, France, and England. But over time, a powerful new idea began to whisper through my mountains and valleys: the idea of freedom. The people who now called me home, a mix of Indigenous, European, African, and other ancestries, began to dream of governing themselves and shaping their own destinies. This dream burst into a call for independence that swept across both my continents. In the north, the United States of America declared its independence on July 4th, 1776, sparking a revolution that created a new kind of nation. Inspired by this and other revolutions, courageous leaders like Simón Bolívar fought tirelessly in the early 1800s, helping many of my southern countries win their freedom from Spanish rule. I watched with pride as new nations were born, each with its own flag, its own national song, and its own unique dream for the future.
Today, my story continues to unfold. I am a vibrant mosaic of cultures, a blend of ancient traditions and modern innovation. My cities are hubs of creativity, my farms help feed the world, and my scientists and artists push the boundaries of human knowledge and expression. The deep roots of my Indigenous peoples remain, intertwined with the diverse cultures brought by generations of immigrants from every corner of the globe. I am a testament to resilience, a living example of how different peoples and histories can come together to create something new. My past is filled with triumphs and sorrows, with connection and conflict. But my story teaches everyone that while we may come from different pasts, we all share a planet and can build a future filled with greater understanding, respect, and endless possibility.
