The story

The Pantheon: A Circle of Light

Imagine standing in the middle of a giant, round room, looking straight up. High above you, a perfect circle opens to the blue sky. This special hole is called an oculus, and it lets a single beam of sunshine dance on the floor. When it rains, little drops fall right into the middle of the room. Before you even come inside, you walk past my giant, tall columns that stand like strong guards at my door. They are so big they make everyone feel small and safe. People from all over the world come to visit me, to feel the sunshine on their faces and look up in wonder. I am the Pantheon, and I live in the heart of Rome, Italy.

My story began a very, very long time ago. A kind Roman man named Marcus Agrippa built me around the year 27 BCE. He wanted to create a special place for all the gods, so he gave me a name that means just that. My name, Pantheon, means “for all the gods.” I was a temple where everyone could come to pray and feel close to them. People loved me, and I was very proud to be so important. But one day, something sad happened. A big fire spread through the city in the year 80 CE, and its hot flames hurt me very badly. I was broken and thought my story was over.

But my story wasn't over. A wonderful emperor named Hadrian saw my broken walls and decided to make me new again, even stronger and more beautiful than before. Around the year 126 CE, his amazing builders got to work. They gave me my most famous feature: my giant, round dome. For over one thousand years, my dome was the biggest in the whole world. Isn't that amazing? The builders had a secret recipe for a special kind of concrete that was both light and super strong, which is why my dome still stands today. Emperor Hadrian was a very thoughtful man. Even though he was the one who rebuilt me, he wanted everyone to remember the person who made me first. So, he put my original builder’s name, Marcus Agrippa, right back on my front. I was so happy to be whole again and to honor my beginnings.

After many, many years of watching the world change, I was given a new job. In the year 609 CE, I became a church. This was a wonderful gift because it meant people would always take care of me and keep me safe. Since then, I have become a final resting place for important people, like the famous artist Raphael, who created beautiful paintings. Today, I am still standing strong, and I welcome friends from all over the world. They come to stand in my circle of light and feel the history all around them. I love showing them that beautiful, strong things can last forever, connecting us all through time no matter how many years go by.
