The Pantheon: My Eye on Rome

Imagine you are standing in the heart of Rome, inside a grand, circular room so vast it feels like the whole world could fit inside. The air is cool and quiet, a peaceful break from the bustling city just outside my doors. If you look straight up, you will see a single, perfect circle of open sky. It is my giant eye, always looking up at the heavens. On sunny days, a bright disc of sunlight travels across my giant marble floor and climbs my curved walls like a slow-motion spotlight, marking the hours. When it rains, a gentle column of water falls straight down to the floor, where special drains wait to drink it up. People who visit me often stand in silence, just staring up at that window to the sky. They call me the eye of Rome, but my real name is the Pantheon.

My story is very, very long, and I am not the first version of myself. The original Pantheon was built by a Roman general named Marcus Agrippa way back around 27 BCE. He made a beautiful temple, but it was made of wood and was sadly destroyed in a big fire. The strong, stone version of me that you see today was built by a clever and powerful Emperor named Hadrian. His amazing architects finished building me around the year 126 CE. My name, Pantheon, means 'all the gods,' because I was built to be a magnificent temple that honored every single one of the Roman gods at once. To show my importance, Hadrian had sixteen massive columns of granite brought all the way from the deserts of Egypt for my entrance porch. They are so big it takes several people holding hands to wrap their arms around just one. My giant bronze doors are the same ones that opened for the Romans almost two thousand years ago.

My most famous feature, the one that makes everyone gasp, is my giant dome. For more than 1,300 years, I had the biggest unsupported dome in the entire world. It was a true marvel of Roman engineering, and it holds a secret. The builders used a special recipe for my concrete. At the bottom of the dome, the concrete is thick and heavy, mixed with strong stones to create a solid base. But as the dome rises higher and higher, the recipe changes. The engineers mixed the concrete with lighter and lighter stones, like pumice, which is a volcanic rock so light it can float on water. This clever trick made my dome strong enough to stand for nearly two thousand years without any steel beams to hold it up. My open eye to the sky, which they call the oculus, isn't just for light. It makes the very top of my dome lighter, which helps me carry the weight and stand tall through the centuries.

As the world changed, so did I. The Roman Empire slowly faded, and a new chapter of my life began. In the year 609 CE, I was given a new and important job. I was transformed from a temple for all the gods into a Christian church called St. Mary and the Martyrs. This change was the reason I am still here today. While many other ancient temples in Rome were taken apart, their marble and stone carried away to build new things, my new purpose protected me. I became a sacred place of worship. Over time, I also became the final resting place for important people. The famous painter Raphael, who loved my beautiful design, asked to be buried here. He was laid to rest inside my walls on April 6th, 1520 CE. Two of Italy’s first kings are buried here, too, resting forever under my watchful eye.

For almost 2,000 years, I have stood in the center of Rome, watching emperors and artists, kings and popes, and millions of curious visitors walk across my floors. My oculus still lets the sun warm my stone and the rain fall from the clouds. I am a solid, living piece of history, a reminder of what incredible things people can build when they are inspired. I connect everyone who walks through my great bronze doors to the ancient past, to the brilliant minds who imagined my giant dome. I hope I inspire today's builders, artists, and dreamers to look up at the sky and imagine what new wonders they can create that will last for thousands of years to come.
