A House for the Whole World

I stand tall and shiny in a big city called New York, right beside a sparkling river. Lots of colorful flags fly outside me. They look like happy kites dancing in the wind. Do you know who I am. I am the United Nations Headquarters. That’s a big name for a very special house. I am a house for the whole world. I was built to be a friendly place where people from every country can come together. They sit in my big rooms to talk, share ideas, and help each other make the world a better, kinder place for you and for me.

A long, long time ago, the world was very sad because of a big war. After the war ended in the year 1945, people decided they wanted to be friends and work for peace. So, they started a special group called the United Nations on October 24th, 1945. This new group needed a home, a place where they could all meet. So they built me. My very first stone was put in place on October 24th, 1949, like the first block in a tall tower. I grew and grew, stone by stone, until I was finished. On January 9th, 1951, I opened my doors for the very first time. I felt so happy. Inside, I have big, sunny rooms where leaders meet to talk about how to make the world a kinder place for everyone.

Today, all my colorful flags dance in the wind outside my windows. There is one flag for each country friend, and they all fly together. They show that we are all part of one big world family, living on our beautiful planet. I love being a house for hope. I am here to remind everyone that when we listen to each other and work together, we can make the world a happy and peaceful home for all the children, everywhere.
