Just want Vienna?
Can you hear the gentle clip-clop of horses pulling carriages down my cobblestone streets? Can you smell the sweet scent of warm apple strudel drifting from my cozy cafes? If you listen closely, you might hear the beautiful sound of a violin or a piano playing a happy tune from an open window. I am a city of grand palaces, lovely parks, and wonderful sounds, sitting right on the banks of the mighty Danube River. Hello. I am Vienna, the capital city of a country called Austria. For hundreds of years, so much incredible music has been written and played in my halls that people all over the world have given me a special nickname. They call me the City of Music.
My story started a very, very long time ago. Around the year 15, I was a small camp for Roman soldiers called Vindobona. For many years, I was just a quiet town on the river. But my real story began in the year 1156, when a noble family made me their capital city, and I started to grow. My biggest and most important change happened in the year 1278. That’s when a powerful family called the Habsburgs arrived. They decided I would be the heart of their huge empire, which is like a kingdom that rules over many different lands. For more than 600 years, they made me their home, building magnificent palaces like the Hofburg and the sunny yellow Schönbrunn Palace. They filled me with art, gardens, and splendid buildings, making me one of the most important cities in the world. I also had to be very brave during a big challenge in the year 1683, but I stood strong, and afterward, I grew even more beautiful.

By the 1800s, I was growing so much that my old city walls felt too tight, like a jacket I had outgrown. On December 20th, 1857, a very important decision was made to take the old walls down. In their place, my people built a magnificent, wide street that goes all the way around my center in a big circle. They called it the Ringstrasse, which means 'Ring Street.' Along this grand new road, they built some of my most famous buildings, like my beautiful State Opera house where singers perform, my giant museums filled with treasures, and lovely green parks where children can play. It was also around this time that my famous musical friends made me their home. A playful genius named Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart created wonderful music here in the late 1700s. A little later, the powerful Ludwig van Beethoven composed some of his greatest symphonies while living within my streets. Their music became my heartbeat.
Today, I am still filled with fun, history, and music. You can visit my palaces and pretend you are a prince or princess. You can ride my Giant Ferris Wheel high into the sky and see my beautiful rooftops spread out below you. And you must try a slice of my world-famous chocolate cake, the Sachertorte. I am a place where the stories of the past and the songs of today live together. Please come and visit me. I am always ready to share my beautiful music and my amazing stories with you.
