A Story About Anxiety

Hi there. My name is Anxiety. I’m a feeling that can give you butterflies in your tummy and make your heart beat like a little drum. I am the feeling of being worried or nervous, especially when you are about to do something new or a little bit scary.

I often visit on the first day of school when you don't know anyone yet. I might also show up when you have to talk in front of the whole class, or when you are learning to ride your bike without training wheels for the first time. It's my job to pop up when things feel uncertain.

When I visit, you don't have to be scared of me. You can take a few slow, deep breaths—like smelling a pretty flower and then blowing out birthday candles. You can also tell a grown-up how you're feeling, or hug your favorite stuffed animal really tight. That helps me calm down.

My secret job is to help keep you safe. I’m like a little alarm that tells you to pay attention. By learning how to listen to me, you can become braver and stronger. Understanding me helps you grow and try new, amazing things. I am still learning with you every day, and my story matters because it shows that understanding your feelings is a big part of growing up.
