I Am Communication
Hello, I'm Communication. You can think of me as the invisible bridge that connects your thoughts and feelings to the world around you. I am present in a quick text message to a friend, a celebratory high-five after a sports game, or even during a difficult conversation with a parent. I am also there in a shared laugh over a silly video you watch together. I am the essential tool you use to build lasting friendships, work through problems, and show other people who you are inside. Without me, everyone would be isolated on their own little islands, unable to share their experiences.
Sometimes, however, I can get tangled and confused. Imagine two friends, Maya and Leo, who are working together on a school project. Maya comes up with a fantastic idea, but just as she starts to explain it, Leo interrupts, talking right over her to share his own thoughts. In that moment, I get stuck. Maya feels unheard and invisible, so she stops trying to contribute and becomes quiet. Seeing her silence, Leo grows frustrated because he thinks she isn't participating and doesn't care about their project. Suddenly, I am no longer a bridge connecting them; I have become a wall pushing them apart. The words that are spoken, and the ones that are not, create a misunderstanding that could damage their friendship. It's my purpose to connect them, but I cannot do it by myself.
To fix this tangled situation, both Maya and Leo have to make a conscious choice to use me carefully. Instead of reacting with anger, Maya takes a deep breath and decides to try again. This time, she uses an 'I-statement' to express how she feels, which helps me work much more effectively. She says, 'I feel frustrated when I can't finish explaining my idea.' This simple sentence changes everything. On the other side, Leo decides to truly listen instead of just waiting for his next turn to speak. He shows he's listening by asking, 'Okay, tell me your idea. What part are you most excited about?' By choosing to speak with respect and listen with purpose, they begin to untangle me. They start to see each other's perspectives, and soon they are combining their ideas to create something even better than what they had before.
I am a superpower that you can practice and improve every single day. My strength isn't just about talking; it's also about listening, understanding, and showing empathy for others. When you learn to use me well, you gain the ability to turn a conflict into a solution and a stranger into a new friend. I continue to help people build stronger relationships and create better communities, and it all begins when one person decides to truly hear another. The power to connect is in your hands.
