Just want Writing?
Hello, I'm Writing. I am the special trick that lets people share their ideas, feelings, and amazing stories without saying a single word. Before I came along, things were very different. Imagine a world where every story had to be kept inside someone's head. If they forgot a part of the story, that part was gone forever. I worried that so many wonderful adventures and important lessons would just disappear like puffs of smoke. My oldest, oldest relatives were pictures that people drew on cave walls as early as 40,000 BCE. They would draw animals and people with spears to tell the story of a big hunt. It was my very first way of helping people share what was on their minds, even if it was a long, long time ago.
As I grew up, I started to change. Around 3,500 BCE, in a place called Mesopotamia, clever people called the Sumerians gave me a new name: Cuneiform. I wasn't just simple pictures anymore. They used a special tool to press me into soft clay tablets, making little wedge shapes that stood for words. I felt so grown up, helping them keep track of important things like how much grain they had. Then, I went on a trip to Egypt around 3,200 BCE and became very beautiful. There, they called me Hieroglyphs. I was made of lovely little pictures of birds, eyes, and water. It was like being part of a secret code. But learning all my different pictures was very hard. A huge change came around 1,200 BCE with the Phoenicians. They had a brilliant idea. They made my shapes stand for sounds. This was the first real alphabet, and it made me so much easier for everyone to learn. I thought to myself, “Now anyone can learn to read and share their stories with me.”. I was ready to meet the whole world.
The Story of Writing

I was ready to meet the whole world.
Even with my new alphabet, I was still quite rare for a long, long time. Books had to be copied by hand, which took forever, so not many people could have them. I wished I could visit more homes and share my stories with everyone. Then, around the year 1440 CE, a man named Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press. It was a wonderful machine that could make copies of me very, very fast. Suddenly, I could be in hundreds of books at once. I was so happy. I could finally travel everywhere and meet all sorts of people. Today, you see me everywhere you look. I am in your favorite books, on street signs, on computer screens, and in the messages you send to friends. I help you learn about dinosaurs, share how you are feeling, and write your own adventures. Thanks to me, a good story never has to be forgotten again.
