I Am Shyness

Hello. My name is Shyness. I'm the feeling you get when you meet new people or have to do something in front of a big group. I can make your cheeks feel warm and your voice very quiet. I am the feeling that makes you want to hide behind a grown-up's legs instead of saying hello right away, and that's okay.

I was with my friend Leo on the 2nd day of his vacation. He saw other kids playing, and I made him feel like just watching from the bench. But Leo took a deep breath and walked over to the sandbox. He quietly started digging next to another boy. Soon, they were building a giant castle together. I got smaller and smaller as their laughter got bigger and bigger.

I learned that even when I am present, a small step like taking a deep breath can make a big difference. Leo showed that it's okay to feel me, but it is also wonderful to build new friendships. I saw how a little bit of bravery helped him grow that day, and I continued to learn from his experience.
