One Task at a Time
Sometimes my desk looks like a mountain of unfinished things. There is a half-done drawing, a pile of LEGOs for a castle I have not built, and my math homework peeking out from under a book. When I see all of it, my brain feels cluttered and a little stressed, making it hard to even start. It is much better when I can see my clean desk and know my work is done. This makes my mind feel clear and ready for fun.
When I feel overwhelmed by my task mountain, I learned a trick to just pick one thing. I do not try to clean my whole messy room at once. Instead, I decide to only focus on putting my books back on the shelf. I walk over, pick up the first book, feel its smooth cover, and place it in its spot. Then I do the next one, and the next, until the whole pile is gone. Breaking a big job into tiny, single steps makes it feel easy and possible to complete.
The best part is the feeling of crossing a finish line. After I finish that one small task, like putting all my books away, I feel a rush of pride. My brain feels a little lighter and happier. This good feeling gives me the energy to start the next small task, like putting my clothes in the hamper. Finishing one thing makes me feel powerful and shows me that I can definitely finish the next one, too.
Finishing tasks matters because it clears the way for the good stuff. When my homework is done and my room is tidy, I do not have those thoughts of ‘I still have to do that’ buzzing in my head. My mind is free to really enjoy playing video games, reading a story, or going outside with my friends. Completing my responsibilities first means my fun time is truly free and relaxing, with no worries hanging over me.
