American Robin

Hello, it's me, an American Robin! You might have seen me hopping around your yard. I'm easy to spot because I have a bright, reddish-orange tummy that looks like a sunset and a handsome gray back. One of my favorite things to do is sing my cheerful song. I love to wake up early in the morning, find a nice high branch, and chirp a happy tune to say hello to the world. My song tells everyone that a new day has begun, and it fills the air with music. I am a very friendly bird, and I love sharing my song with all of my neighbors, whether they have feathers or not! It’s my special way of making the world a brighter place, one little chirp at a time.

I am a very busy bird, always working on something important. My favorite snack in the whole world is a juicy earthworm! To find one, I hop across lawns and tilt my head to the side. I'm not just being silly; I'm listening very carefully for the sound of worms wiggling under the grass. When I hear one, I quickly pull it out for a tasty meal. Besides looking for snacks, I am also a busy builder. My mate and I work together to build a strong, cup-shaped nest. We use bits of mud and grass, weaving them together until our nest is cozy and safe. Once our home is ready, we lay our beautiful, sky-blue eggs inside. It is the perfect place to start our family and keep our babies warm until they are ready to fly.

Have you ever heard a grown-up say, "The robins are back! Spring must be here!"? People get very excited to see me in their yards because I am often seen as the first sign of spring. That's because when winter comes and the weather gets cold, it's hard to find yummy worms to eat. So, most of my friends and I fly south to warmer places where there is plenty of food. But we always come back home when the weather warms up and the snow melts. People have known about my family for a very long time. A famous scientist named Carl Linnaeus even wrote about us in his books way back in the year 1766. He helped everyone learn just how special we are.

My story is still happening every single day in yards and parks all over. I have a very important job in nature. When I eat delicious berries, I fly from place to place, and I help spread their seeds all over the ground. This helps new plants, bushes, and trees grow strong and tall, which gives other animals food and shelter. My happy song also brings a lot of joy to neighborhoods everywhere. Hearing my cheerful tune in the morning can make anyone smile. I am proud to be a helpful and cheerful neighbor to have around, and I hope my song makes your day a little brighter!
