The story

The Bird Who Travels the World

Hello! I am an Arctic Tern. I have a snappy black cap on my head and fluffy white feathers. My beak is pointy and bright red, just like a little cherry. I hatched from a tiny egg in a place called the Arctic. It was very chilly but also very bright! In the summer when I was born, the sun stayed up to say hello all day and all night. A long time ago, way back in the year 1764, people first learned about my amazing family.

When the air gets cold and winter is coming, I don't stay in one place. I go on a super long trip! I fly all the way from the top of the world, called the Arctic, to the very bottom of the world, called Antarctica. Then, I fly all the way back again every single year. It is the longest trip any animal in the whole world makes. I love to spread my long, graceful wings and soar over the big blue ocean. I see puffy clouds that look like soft cotton balls in the sky. My wings help me glide on the wind, floating like a kite. It is a very long journey, but I am a strong flyer and I love seeing the world from up high.

When I get hungry on my trip, I look for a yummy snack. My favorite food is little fish swimming in the sea. I hover in the air, flapping my wings to stay in one spot. Then, splash! I dive down fast and catch a fish in my pointy red beak. By traveling so far, I help keep the oceans healthy. It is my special job to be a world traveler, and I am happy to help our big, beautiful planet.
