Coyote

Hello there. I'm a coyote, a clever member of the dog family. You can recognize me by my pointy ears, my long bushy tail, and my special coat of fur that helps me blend in with the world around me. A long time ago, in 1823, a naturalist named Thomas Say gave my species its scientific name, Canis latrans. Do you know what that means? It means 'barking dog.' He gave us that name because we love to communicate. My favorite way to talk to my family is with my famous howls and yips. It's like singing a song across the fields and forests to say, 'I'm here.' or 'Hello, family.'

One of the best things about being a coyote is that I can make a home almost anywhere. My relatives and I are super adaptable, which means we can live all across North America. Some of us live in hot deserts, some live in snowy forests, and some of us have even figured out how to live in busy cities. I love my family, and we live together in a group called a pack. My mate and I raise our baby pups, who are usually born in the springtime. We keep them safe and warm in cozy dens that we dig underground. To feed my family, I have to be a good hunter. I am an omnivore, which means I eat all sorts of things. My favorite foods are mice and rabbits, but I also enjoy yummy berries. Being able to eat lots of different foods is one of the secrets to my success.

My real superpower isn't my speed or my sharp teeth, it's my brain. I am very smart and I am a quick learner. This helps me figure out new places and stay safe from danger. Because we are so good at adapting to changes, my kind has been able to spread out and find new homes all over the continent. This journey really began in the early 1900s, when we started to explore new territories. While some animals have a hard time when their homes change, my cleverness and resilience have helped me find opportunities to thrive. I am proud to be such a great survivor.

My story isn't just about surviving; it's also about helping. I have a very special job in nature. As an omnivore, I hunt for small animals like mice and other rodents. By doing this, I help keep the number of these little creatures in balance. This is important because it keeps the fields and forests healthy for all the other plants and animals that live there. I am an important part of the ecosystem. So, the next time you are outside and you hear a howl echoing in the distance, don't be scared. It might just be me, talking to my family and doing my part to help the world.
