Elk

Hi there. I am an elk. I am one of the biggest members of the deer family. I live in big, beautiful forests and meadows with my family. My family is called a herd. We love to stay together. Staying together keeps us safe and cozy. It is so nice to have my herd with me in our forest home.

My whole day is about finding yummy food. I love to munch on tasty grasses, flowers, and leaves. They are my favorite snacks. The boy elks in my herd are extra special. Every single year, they grow amazing branches on their heads. These are called antlers. They get bigger and bigger as they grow. Then, plop. They fall right off. After they fall off, new ones start to grow all over again.

Being an elk is a very important job. When I munch on plants, I help clear the way for new, little plants and flowers. This helps them get lots of sunshine so they can grow big and strong. This keeps our forest home healthy for all the other animals that live here with us. I'm proud to be a helper in my beautiful, wild home.
