The story

Hachikō: The Faithful Friend

Hello! My name is Hachikō. I am a fluffy, cream-colored Akita dog, and my story began in Japan on November 10th, 1923. In 1924, my life became so happy when I met my very best friend, a kind professor named Hidesaburō Ueno. Every single morning, I would walk with him to the bustling Shibuya Station. I’d sit and watch as he got on the train to go to work. The best part of my day was in the afternoon when I would run back to the station, my tail wagging like a drum, to greet him as he returned.

Our happy routine continued until one afternoon in 1925. I went to the station just like always, ready to see my friend’s smiling face, but Professor Ueno didn't get off the train. I didn't understand that something very sad had happened and he wasn't able to come home anymore. But my heart believed he would return, so I waited. I came back the next day, and the day after that. I waited every single day for almost ten years, always hoping to see my friend step off that train.

After a while, the people who worked at the station and other travelers started to notice me. At first, some weren't so friendly, but they soon understood I was waiting for someone I loved very much. They began to bring me tasty food and fresh water, and they would pet my head gently. Then, in 1932, a person wrote a story about me in the newspaper. Soon, people from all over Japan knew about my long wait. They started to call me 'Chūken Hachikō,' which means 'faithful dog Hachikō' in Japanese.

In 1934, while I was still waiting patiently every day, the people did something amazing. They built a big bronze statue that looked just like me, right outside Shibuya Station, so everyone would remember me. My journey ended in 1935, but my statue is still there today. It reminds everyone who sees it about the powerful, unbreakable friendship between people and their animal companions. My story shows that love and loyalty are forever.
