Just want Iberian Lynx?
Hello there. My name is Lynx, and I am an Iberian Lynx, a very special wild cat from the sunny lands of Spain and Portugal. You can always recognize me by my unique features. I have long, pointy ears with black tufts of fur at the tips, which are perfect for hearing the quietest sounds in the forest. My coat is a sandy, tawny color, covered in dark spots that help me blend in with the sun-dappled ground. This camouflage keeps me hidden from both my prey and any potential dangers. And if you see me walking away, you’ll notice my very short tail with a black tip, almost as if it was dipped in ink. My home is a special kind of forest filled with cork oak trees and dense shrubs, known as Mediterranean woodland. It’s the perfect place for a cat like me to live and hunt.
My life is a great adventure, and it is all about the hunt for my favorite food: the European rabbit. I am what you would call a specialist hunter, which means that rabbits make up almost every single one of my meals. They are so important that my survival, and the survival of my family, depends entirely on them. To catch them, I have to be patient and clever. I use my incredibly sharp eyesight to spot a rabbit from far away. Then, I move with absolute silence, using my soft paws to creep through the undergrowth without making a sound. I wait for the perfect moment, staying perfectly still, until the rabbit is close enough. Then, with a powerful leap, I pounce. Finding enough rabbits to eat is the most important job I have, and it keeps me strong and healthy.

A very difficult time began for my kind around the 1950s. A sickness started to spread among the European rabbits, and suddenly, our main source of food began to vanish. It became harder and harder for us to find enough to eat, and many of my fellow lynx did not survive. Our world grew quiet and empty. The situation became desperate over the next few decades. By the year 2002, a very scary number was announced: there were fewer than 100 of us left in the entire world. We had become the most endangered cat species on the whole planet. We were so close to disappearing forever, and it felt like our story was coming to an end.
But then, something wonderful happened. People decided they had to help us. Around the year 2004, a group of dedicated scientists and conservationists created a special program just to save the Iberian Lynx. They built large, safe enclosures where we could live without threats and raise our kittens in peace. These protected areas were part of a captive breeding program designed to help our numbers grow again. After years of hard work, the program was ready for the next big step. Starting in 2009, the conservationists began to carefully release some of my lynx friends back into protected areas of the wild. They chose places where there were healthy, thriving rabbit populations waiting for us, giving us the best chance to succeed.
I am so happy to tell you that the rescue plan worked. Our comeback story is one of hope. Thanks to all the hard work of those caring people, our numbers began to grow. In 2015, we reached a major milestone when our status was changed from 'Critically Endangered' to 'Endangered,' which was a huge step forward. The good news kept coming, and by 2024, our population had grown to over 2,000 individuals living in the wild. My story shows that when people work together, they can make a real difference and save a species from the brink. I am proud to be a symbol of that hope. As I patrol my territory, I help keep the rabbit population in check, which keeps the whole Mediterranean woodland ecosystem healthy and in balance.
