Just want Salamander?
Hello there! My name is Sal, and I’m a salamander. My life began in a very special way, not on land, but in the water! I started as a tiny, jelly-like egg resting in a cool, clear stream. When I was ready, I hatched out and became a larva. I didn't look like I do now. I had fluffy, feathery gills on the sides of my head that let me breathe underwater, just like a fish or a tadpole does. It was so much fun swimming around and exploring my watery home. Being an amphibian is the best because it means I get to live two amazing lives. My first life was in the water, and I couldn't wait to see what my second life on land would be like!
As I grew bigger, a wonderful change started to happen. It’s a big word called metamorphosis! My feathery water-breathing gills began to shrink and disappear. In their place, I grew something new and amazing inside my body: lungs! These lungs would let me breathe air, which meant I was getting ready for my big move. I said goodbye to the stream and wiggled my way onto the land for the very first time. The forest was so big and green! I found the perfect home under a dark, damp log. It’s very important for my skin to stay moist, because it helps me breathe and stay healthy. My log home is cool and wet, just the way I like it. I feel so cozy and safe here, hidden away from the bright sun and ready for my new adventures in the forest.
Life in the forest is full of delicious snacks. I love to eat wiggly worms, crunchy insects, and sometimes even a slow-moving slug. Hunting for my dinner is one of my favorite things to do. But living in the forest also means I have to be careful. Sometimes, a hungry bird might try to catch me. That’s when I use my incredible superpower! It's called regeneration. If a bird grabs my tail, I can do something amazing. I can just let my tail go, and poof! I wiggle away to safety. The bird is left with just a little piece of my tail, and I am free. Don't worry, though. The best part of my superpower is that I can grow a brand new tail. It’s my very own magic trick that helps keep me safe from danger.

You might think I'm just a small creature, but I have a very important job here in the forest. I'm a helper in the forest ecosystem! By eating lots of bugs and slugs, I help keep the plants healthy and strong. Too many insects can munch on all the green leaves, but I help make sure that doesn't happen. So, I’m like a little forest gardener. Even small animals like me have a big job to do to keep our home balanced and beautiful. The next time you are exploring in the woods, look closely under a log or a damp leaf. You might find a quiet helper like me!
