Just want Saola?
Hello! My name is Saola, and I have a very special secret. I live deep in the misty Annamite Mountains of Vietnam and Laos. People call me the 'Asian Unicorn,' but it's not because I have one horn. It's because I am so rare and mysterious that seeing me is like seeing a magical creature! I have soft, chocolate-brown fur that helps me blend in with the shadows of the trees. My face is very special, with beautiful white markings that make me look unique. And I don't have one horn, I have two! They are very long and straight, and they point straight back from my head. My home is one of the most beautiful places in the world, filled with green leaves and the sound of gentle streams.
I am a very shy animal, and I love living a quiet life hidden in the forest. My favorite thing to do is wander near the cool, clear streams and nibble on the tasty leaves I find on the plants there. For a very long time, almost nobody in the big, wide world knew I was even here! My family and I lived our secret lives in peace. But then, something amazing happened. In May of 1992, a group of scientists were exploring my mountain home and they discovered my kind for the first time. They were so surprised to find a new animal like me! It was a very exciting time, and suddenly, the world learned about the mysterious Saola living in the forests of Southeast Asia. It was like the forest shared its biggest secret.
Even though my home is beautiful, it has some challenges. Sometimes there are traps in the forest that are not meant for me, but they can accidentally hurt my family. Because we are so good at hiding, it’s very hard for people to know exactly how many of us are left. But I have a happy thought that I hold onto. There are many kind people in the world who are working very hard to protect my forest home. They are my heroes! By keeping my home safe and healthy, they are not just helping me, but they are also helping all the other wonderful animals who share the forest with me. I am a special part of this world, and my story reminds everyone that there are still amazing secrets to discover and protect in nature.
