Just want Abbas ibn Firnas?
Hello. My name is Abbas ibn Firnas, and I am excited to tell you my story. I was born a very long time ago, in the year 810. My home was a beautiful place called Ronda in Al-Andalus, which is now part of the country of Spain. Ever since I was a little boy, I loved to look up at the sky. I would watch birds for hours, seeing how they could spread their wings and soar through the air. I dreamed that one day, I could fly just like them. Besides watching birds, I loved learning. I studied everything I could, from science and music to writing beautiful poetry. My head was always full of questions and big ideas.
When I grew up, I moved to the great city of Córdoba. It was an amazing place, full of smart people and new discoveries. I was lucky enough to become an inventor and a poet for the ruler, whose name was Abd al-Rahman II. I loved to create new things that surprised and delighted people. I built a special kind of clock that did not use gears but used water to tell time. It was called a water clock. I also figured out a secret way to turn sand into beautiful, clear glass, which no one in my land had done before. My most amazing creation was a room I built inside my home. When you walked in, it looked like you were outside at night. I made it show stars, clouds, and even lightning and thunder. It was like having the sky right inside my house.
Of all my ideas, my biggest dream was still to fly like a bird. I thought about it for years and finally, in the year 875, I decided I was ready to try. It was a very big day. I spent a long time building my flying suit. It had large wings made from a wooden frame, covered in silk fabric. To make them look just right, I covered the wings with real feathers from birds. When it was finished, I carried my invention to the top of a tall hill near the city of Córdoba. A large crowd of people gathered below to watch me. I took a deep breath, looked at the sky, and then I took a brave leap into the air. For a few minutes, it worked. I was gliding through the air, just like the birds I had watched as a child. It was amazing. But then I realized I had made a mistake. I had forgotten to add a tail. A bird uses its tail to steer and to slow down for a safe landing. Without one, my landing was very bumpy, and I hurt my back.

Even though my landing was rough, I was not sad. I had learned something very important that day. I understood that a tail was just as important as wings for flying and landing safely. I lived to be 77 years old, always thinking and inventing. My big leap showed people that it might be possible for humans to fly one day. My story inspired other inventors for hundreds of years to keep trying. Today, people remember me as one of the first people to ever try to fly. To honor me, there is a bridge in Córdoba and even a crater on the Moon named after me.
