A Story About Abraham Maslow

Hello, I am Abraham Maslow. When I was born in the year 1908, I was a very curious person. I always wanted to know about people. I would ask questions like, “What makes people happy?” and “What helps people feel strong and good inside?” I loved thinking about what everyone needs to feel their very best. I wanted to help everyone understand how to be happy and healthy in their hearts and minds. It was my favorite thing to think about.

I had a very big idea about what people need. A long time ago, in 1943, I shared my idea with the world. I said that everyone needs certain things to grow, just like a little plant needs sunshine and water. You need yummy food to eat and a cozy bed to sleep in. You need a safe home to live in and big hugs from your family to feel loved. I drew this idea like a big triangle, which some people call a pyramid. The things you need most are at the bottom, like a strong foundation for a house.

At the very top of my pyramid is the best part. When we have all the things we need, like food and love, we can do wonderful things. We can learn new things at school, draw beautiful pictures, and shine our brightest, like a big, happy star. I lived to be 62 years old and passed away in 1970. My idea of the pyramid is still used today to help people remember to take care of themselves and each other. When we all have what we need, we can all be happy and strong together.
