Amelia Bloomer

Hello! My name is Amelia Bloomer. I was born a long, long time ago, on May 27th, 1818, in a small town called Homer, New York. When I was a little girl, I loved to learn and go to school. Back then, there were not as many chances for girls to get a big education, but I always knew I wanted to do something important. For a while, I worked as a teacher, and I really loved helping children learn how to read and write.

In 1840, I married a kind man named Dexter Bloomer, and we moved to a town called Seneca Falls. It was a very exciting place to be! In 1848, I went to a special meeting called the Seneca Falls Convention. It was the very first big meeting in America all about women's rights. Listening to the speakers made me feel so inspired! I decided that I wanted to help women share their ideas with the world. So, in 1849, I started my very own newspaper. I called it 'The Lily.' It was the first newspaper in the country made just for women, by women, and I was so proud to give women a voice.

During those days, women had to wear very long, heavy dresses that made it hard to move, work, or even walk around easily. One day, around the year 1851, I saw a friend wearing a much more comfortable outfit. It was a shorter skirt with puffy, loose pants underneath. I thought it was a wonderful idea! I started wearing them too and wrote all about how great they were in my newspaper, 'The Lily.' Before long, people started calling the pants 'bloomers' after my last name! Some people laughed at the new style, but many women were very happy to finally have clothes they could play and work in comfortably.

I spent the rest of my life writing and speaking about fairness for everyone. I even introduced two of my very important friends, Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. They worked together for many years to help women get the right to vote. I lived to be 76 years old. Today, people remember me for being brave enough to speak up and for showing everyone that it is okay to try something new, whether it is starting a newspaper or wearing a comfortable pair of pants!
