Just want Bernardo O'Higgins?
Hello! My name is Bernardo O'Higgins. I was born a long time ago, on August 20th, 1778, in a town called Chillán. Today, Chillán is in a beautiful country called Chile, but when I was a boy, it was all part of the Spanish Empire. This meant that the King of Spain made all the rules for my home. My father, Ambrosio, was an important man who worked for the king, and my mother was named Isabel. I grew up with my mother's family and loved my home, but I always dreamed of seeing it become its own country, free to make its own choices.
When I was a young man, I traveled far from home to study. Around the year 1795, I went to school first in Spain and then in England. In England, I met a man named Francisco de Miranda. He told me about his big idea: that the countries in South America, including my home, should be free to rule themselves. His words sparked a fire in my heart! I felt so excited and hopeful. From that day on, I knew I wanted to help Chile become an independent nation, where the people could make their own decisions about their future.
I returned to Chile in 1802, ready to turn my dream into a reality. In 1810, the fight for freedom began! It was called the Chilean War of Independence. I became a soldier and then a general, leading brave people who also believed in a free Chile. The fighting was long and difficult, but we never gave up hope. We had wonderful friends helping us, like the great general José de San Martín from Argentina. In 1817, we worked together to win a very important fight called the Battle of Chacabuco. This victory was a huge step and brought us much closer to our goal of freedom.

Finally, the big day arrived! On February 12th, 1818, we declared that Chile was officially an independent country. I was so proud of what we had all achieved together. The people of Chile asked me to be their first leader, which was a job called the Supreme Director. For six years, until 1823, I worked hard to build our new nation. We started a navy to protect our shores from ships, opened new schools so children could learn, and helped our country grow strong and stand on its own feet.
After my time as leader, I moved to the nearby country of Peru. I lived to be 64 years old. Today, the people of Chile remember me as one of the 'Fathers of the Fatherland.' They know I helped their country become the free and proud nation it is today. My dream came true, and it makes me happy to know that the country I loved so much is still thriving.
