The story

Carl Rogers: A Story of Listening

Hello! My name is Carl Rogers. I was born on January 8th, 1902, in a town called Oak Park, Illinois. I grew up on a farm with my five brothers and sisters. I loved being outdoors and was very curious about science. I spent hours reading books about everything from moths to farming, and I learned to think carefully about the world around me.

When I grew up and went to college, I knew I wanted to help people. I decided to study psychology, which is all about how people think and feel. I noticed that many helpers tried to tell people what to do. I had a different idea. I believed that every person is special and has good ideas inside them. My big idea was that the best way to help someone was to listen to them with all my heart and truly understand them. This helps people find their own answers.

I called my idea 'person-centered therapy.' I became a professor and taught my ideas to many students. In 1961, I wrote a book called 'On Becoming a Person' to share my thoughts with even more people. I wanted everyone—not just therapists, but teachers and parents, too—to see how powerful it can be to just listen and be kind. I believed this could help people everywhere get along better.

I lived a long and full life, helping people feel understood. I lived to be 85 years old. Today, my ideas about listening with kindness and respect are used by counselors, teachers, and friends all over the world. People remember me for showing that one of the greatest gifts you can give someone is to truly listen.
