Just want Carlo Collodi?
Hello! My name is Carlo Lorenzini, but you probably know me by my special writer's name, Carlo Collodi. I want to tell you the story of my life and how I created a little wooden puppet who became famous all over the world. I was born in the beautiful city of Florence, Italy, on November 24th, 1826. My father was a talented cook, and my mother was a skilled seamstress. We did not have a lot of money, but my childhood was filled with stories and love. For ten years, I lived in a small village called Collodi, which was my mother’s hometown. I loved that village so much that when I started writing, I chose its name as my own.
When I grew up in the 1840s and 1850s, Italy was not the single, united country it is today. It was a collection of separate states, and many people, including myself, dreamed of seeing it become one nation. I felt so strongly about this cause that I volunteered to fight as a soldier for the region of Tuscany, first in 1848 and again in 1859. During this time, I discovered that words could be just as powerful as weapons. In 1848, I started my own newspaper called 'Il Lampione,' which means 'The Lantern.' I used my writing to shine a light on my political ideas and encourage others to support the dream of a free and united Italy.
After my time as a soldier and a journalist focused on politics, I took a job working for the government. Life took an interesting turn in 1875 when a publisher asked me to do something new: translate a collection of classic French fairy tales into Italian. I discovered that I truly enjoyed this work. It made me realize that I had a special ability for writing stories for children. I loved creating worlds of wonder and writing tales that were not just entertaining, but also taught important lessons about life in a way that young readers could understand and connect with.

My greatest adventure in writing began in 1881. I was asked to write a story for a new children's magazine that was starting in Italy. I sat down and began to imagine a poor, lonely woodcarver who creates a puppet that can surprisingly walk and talk just like a real boy. I called this serialized story 'La storia di un burattino,' which translates to 'The Story of a Puppet.' You probably know this puppet by his famous name: Pinocchio! At first, I didn't plan for a happy ending. I actually ended the story with Pinocchio getting into serious trouble and being left for dead. But the children reading the magazine loved the mischievous puppet so much. They wrote letters to the publisher, begging for me to continue his story, so I decided to bring him back for more adventures.
I was happy to continue Pinocchio's tale, exploring his journey, the mistakes he made, and his deep wish to become a real boy. To help him along his path, I created new characters like the wise Talking Cricket, who acted as his conscience, and the kind Blue Fairy, who served as a gentle guide. In 1883, all the parts of the story were finally collected and published as a single book titled 'The Adventures of Pinocchio.' The story was about more than just a puppet's escapades; it was about the challenges of growing up. It taught important lessons about the value of being honest (as Pinocchio's growing nose showed!), the importance of going to school, and the wisdom of listening to those who care about you.
I lived to be 63 years old and passed away in my beloved Florence in 1890. I never could have imagined that my story about a little wooden puppet would travel so far beyond Italy and become one of the most famous tales in the world. My book has since been translated into hundreds of languages and adapted into countless plays and movies for new generations to enjoy. I am filled with joy knowing that the story of Pinocchio continues to be shared, reminding children everywhere that with courage, honesty, and a good heart, anyone can find their own path to becoming 'real'.
