The story

The Story of King Croesus

Hello! My name is Croesus, and I was a king a very, very long time ago. Around the year 560 BCE, I ruled a beautiful kingdom called Lydia. My castle was in a city named Sardis. A special river called the Pactolus flowed right by my home, and it was filled with sparkling gold dust! Because of all that gold, everyone said I was the richest king in the whole world.

Back in my day, it was hard to buy and sell things. People traded with lumpy pieces of gold and silver, but they were all different sizes. I thought, 'There must be a better way!' So, I had a bright idea. I created the world's very first coins made of pure gold and pure silver. I made sure each coin was the same size and weight. To show they were real, I stamped them with my own special mark—a lion and a bull. After that, trading was fair and easy for everyone in my kingdom.

One day, a very wise man named Solon came to visit my castle. I showed him all my shiny treasure and asked him, 'Am I the happiest man in the world?'. Solon shook his head and told me that having lots of gold doesn't make you truly happy. Later, I started to worry about another powerful king named Cyrus the Great. I sent a message to a special place called the Oracle of Delphi to ask what I should do. The Oracle gave me a tricky riddle. It said, 'If you attack the Persians, you will destroy a great empire.' I was so excited because I thought it meant I was going to win!

Believing I would win, I went to war with King Cyrus around the year 546 BCE. But I had not understood the riddle correctly! The great empire that was destroyed was my very own kingdom of Lydia. I was so sad to lose my home and my kingdom. King Cyrus saw how much I had learned about being too proud of my riches. Instead of punishing me, he was kind. He asked me to be his friend and to give him advice.

I lived for many more years as a good friend and advisor to King Cyrus. Even today, when people talk about someone who has a lot of money, they might say that person is 'as rich as Croesus.' But I hope you remember me for something more important. I invented gold and silver coins that people all over the world still use in different ways. Most of all, I hope you remember the lesson I learned: that being wise and having good friends are treasures far greater than gold.
