The story

Cyrus the Great, a Fair Ruler

Hello! My name is Cyrus, and many people today call me Cyrus the Great. I was born a long, long time ago, around the year 600 BCE, in a land called Persia. My father was a king named Cambyses I, and I grew up in a royal family, learning all about how to be a leader. When I was a young man, in 559 BCE, I became the king of my people in a place called Anshan. It was a small kingdom back then, but I had big dreams for what we could achieve. I wanted to bring people together and build something truly special.

My first goal was to unite all the Persian people and build a strong, safe home for them. I led my army against the powerful Median Empire, which ruled over us at the time. It was a difficult challenge, but by 550 BCE, we were victorious! This victory was the beginning of my new empire, which historians now call the Achaemenid Empire. But my work was not done. I continued to lead my soldiers, and around 547 BCE, we also brought the wealthy kingdom of Lydia into our growing empire. My goal was never just to win battles; it was to create a new kind of empire where different kinds of people could live together peacefully and feel secure.

One of the biggest and most famous cities in the ancient world was Babylon. In the year 539 BCE, I led my army to its giant gates. Usually, this would mean a long and terrible battle, but something amazing happened. The people of Babylon welcomed me into their city! They were unhappy with their own king and had heard stories that I was a fair and just ruler. I entered the city without a fight and made a promise to everyone there that I would not harm them or damage their homes. I showed respect for their traditions and their gods, which was very different from how most conquerors acted in those days.

To prove that my promises were real, I had my words carved onto a special clay cylinder in 539 BCE. Today, people call it the Cyrus Cylinder, and it is a very important piece of history. On it, I declared that all people throughout my empire were free to worship their own gods and follow their own beliefs. It also said that people who had been captured by the old kings of Babylon and forced to live there could finally return to their homelands. This was very important for the Jewish people, whom I allowed to go back to Jerusalem and rebuild their sacred temple. I believed that ruling with respect and kindness made an empire stronger than ruling with fear.

I spent the rest of my life ruling the largest empire the world had ever seen at that time. My life came to an end during a battle in the year 530 BCE. I lived to be about 70 years old. Today, people remember me not just for the lands I brought together, but for how I chose to rule them. The Achaemenid Empire I created lasted for over 200 years, and my ideas about freedom, respect, and human rights have inspired leaders and thinkers for thousands of years. I hope my story shows the world that a great leader can also be a good one.
