The story

Cyrus the Great

Hello, I am Cyrus. I was a king who lived a very, very long time ago in a land called Persia. I was born around the year 600 BCE. When I was young, I had a big dream. I didn't just want to be a powerful ruler. I wanted to bring all kinds of different people together. My greatest wish was for everyone to live side-by-side in peace and happiness. I believed that we could all be part of one big, friendly family, even if we came from different places or had different traditions. This idea was very important to me and shaped everything I would do as a king.

In the year 559 BCE, I became the king of my people. I knew that to create the peaceful world I dreamed of, I needed to unite everyone. So, I started by bringing different kingdoms together. First, I joined with the kingdom of Media, and then with another called Lydia. Slowly, I connected many lands and many people. I created a huge new empire, which we called the Achaemenid Empire. My goal wasn't just to make it big; it was to make it a safe and happy home for everyone who lived there. I wanted every person, from every city and village, to feel protected and cared for under my rule.

One of my most important moments happened in the year 539 BCE. I traveled to the great city of Babylon. Many rulers would have fought to take over such a big city, but I did things differently. I walked into Babylon peacefully, without a single battle. I told the people living there that they did not have to change their ways. They could keep their own beliefs and their own way of life. At that time, many Jewish people were being held in Babylon as captives. I told them they were free to go back to their homes. I even helped them rebuild their special temple. I believed everyone deserved to be free and to follow their heart.

To make sure everyone knew my promises, my ideas about kindness and respect were written down on a special clay object called the Cyrus Cylinder. This was my promise to be a fair and just ruler for all the people in my empire. The Achaemenid Empire that I built lasted for many years after I was gone, and my ideas about fairness continued to guide it. I lived to be about 70 years old and passed away in 530 BCE. Even today, people remember me as a king who believed that being kind to others is the greatest strength a leader can have.
