Duke Ellington

Hello. My name is Edward Kennedy Ellington, but most people know me as Duke. I was born on April 29th, 1899, in Washington, D.C. My parents always taught me to be polite and act like a gentleman. Because of my nice manners, my friends gave me the nickname 'Duke,' and it stuck. At first, I loved to draw and paint more than anything. But one day, I heard a style of piano music called ragtime. It was so bouncy and fun that I knew I had to learn to play. Music soon became my greatest love.

When I was a teenager, I was so excited about music that I started my very own band. We played happy tunes for parties and dances. In 1923, I made a big move to New York City. The city was buzzing with excitement and new sounds, and it was the perfect place for a musician like me. My small band grew into a big orchestra. We got a very important job playing at a famous nightclub in Harlem called the Cotton Club. The best part was that people from all over the country could listen to us play on the radio. We created a special sound that was all our own, full of interesting rhythms and moods.

I didn't just play the piano; I was also a composer. A composer is someone who writes music. I loved creating new songs, and I wrote over a thousand of them in my life. You might have heard one of my most famous songs called 'It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing).' I liked to call my style 'American Music' because it was a mix of so many different feelings and ideas. Starting in the 1930s, my orchestra and I began to travel all around the world. We shared our music with people in Europe and beyond. It was wonderful to see people from different countries all tapping their feet to the same beat.

Over the years, I received many special awards for my work. In 1969, I was given the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which is one of the highest honors a person can receive in the United States. I lived to be 75 years old, and I am so happy that my music has lived on even longer. People all over the world still listen to my songs and play my compositions today. I always believed that music was a wonderful way to bring people together, and I hope my tunes continue to make the world a more joyful place.
