The story

Eleanor Roosevelt: A Friend to the World

Hello. My name is Eleanor Roosevelt. When I was a little girl, I was very shy. But I loved to learn new things, and most of all, I loved to help people. I dreamed of making the world a kinder place for everyone to live.

When I grew up, I married a wonderful man named Franklin D. Roosevelt. In the year 1933, he became the President of the United States. That meant I was the First Lady. Franklin couldn't travel easily, so I became his eyes and ears. I traveled all over the country to meet people. I would listen to them and then tell Franklin what they needed so he could help them.

I believed that everyone should be treated with kindness and fairness. It didn't matter what they looked like or where they came from. I used my voice to speak up for people who were not treated fairly. I wanted to be a friend to anyone who felt like they did not have one.

After I was the First Lady, I worked with people from all over the world. We met at a place called the United Nations. In the year 1948, we wrote a special list of promises called the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It was a promise that every single person in the world deserves to be safe and respected.

I lived a long and happy life for 78 years. Today, people remember me as someone who cared very much for others. They remember that I worked hard to make the world a more fair and peaceful home for all of its people.
